Modern Postal History

So- “Stamps are boring” maybe some peoples first thought. Just a (usually) colourful image , viewed in isolation, maybe to celebrate an anniversary or event – maybe with just a monarch’s head. Good enough to satisfies some peoples collecting interests – but what if there is more..?

Context.. that is what is ‘more’.. when was the stamp used ?, where was the stamp used? , what was the stamp used for ?

All of the answers to this questions and any more information giving us context  leads us to the study of ‘Modern Postal History’.

Royal Mail introduce a ‘simplified’ surcharging structure

In a move appearing to placate pressure groups who have pushed back on Royal Mails format related pricing scheme (introduced in 2006) as ‘confusing to the elderly’ , a ‘simplified’ surcharging scheme for items underpaid or not paid at all has been introduced that moves the burden of surcharging away from ‘Celebration Cards’ (aka Birthday and Christmas Cards) to ‘e-commerce’ mail. If you succeed in posting a Special Delivery item to an international destination (the most popular being Eire) then it will be returned to sender by the OE with an appropriate instructional sticker applied. OE1066 . It is worth noting that the 0845 number should have been changed to the 0345 number under the appropriate directive.

In Central London there are fewer opportunities for Birds to make their nests but one option is of course is a pillar box .. Royal Mail indicate to their staff  when a Post Box contains a nest  in order that greater care can be taken in emptying the box .
